About the Product

The BLOCKsignalling BOD4-RLY is an infra-red vehicle detector with a built-in 1.5A relay, ideal for automatically operating the Faller 161675 Stop Section electromagnet when a vehicle is detected.

Originally developed for use with a Faller model car layout stop solenoid, the BOD4-RLY detects a passing vehicle using the supplied infra-red sensor and automatically operates its built-in relay. The relay can handle loads of up to 1.5A at 24V DC, making it suitable for controlling the Faller stop electromagnet and other accessories.

The infra-red sensor can be installed beneath the roadway or track and detects vehicles using reflected invisible infra-red light, allowing automatic operation without requiring physical switches or contacts.

A range of built-in operating modes and adjustable timing options allows the detector to be configured for different applications, including instantaneous operation, timed pulses, recurring pulses and relay toggle operation.

Key Features

  • Designed for automatic detection of Faller Car System vehicles.
  • Suitable for operating the Faller 161675 Stop Section electromagnet.
  • Supplied with an infra-red sensor.
  • Built-in relay rated up to 1.5A at 24V DC.
  • Infra-red detection requires no physical contact with the vehicle.
  • Sensor can be installed beneath the roadway or track.
  • Normally-open, common and normally-closed relay contacts.
  • Volt-free relay contacts for flexible accessory control.
  • Multiple built-in operating modes.
  • Adjustable relay timing.
  • Adjustable sensor sensitivity.
  • Fixed or randomised timing options.
  • Can be configured to respond to only a proportion of detections.
  • Regulated +5V auxiliary output.
  • No programming required for basic operation.
  • Suitable for model railway applications as well as Faller vehicle layouts.

Faller 161675 Stop Section Control

The BOD4-RLY is particularly suitable for automatically controlling the Faller 161675 Stop Section.

When a vehicle passes over the infra-red sensor, the BOD4-RLY can operate the stop-section electromagnet through its built-in relay. The relay can then release according to the selected operating mode and timing settings.

The BOD4-RLY was originally developed following a requirement to operate a stop solenoid on a Faller model car layout, with its larger relay providing the current-handling capability required for an electromagnet.

Infra-Red Vehicle Detection

The supplied infra-red sensor contains both an infra-red emitter and detector. Invisible infra-red light is reflected from the underside of the passing vehicle and detected by the module.

The sensor can be mounted beneath the roadway or track surface, allowing the detection system to remain unobtrusive.

The diagram shows the recommended positioning of the infra-red sensor beneath the roadway or track for reliable detection of passing vehicles.

Sensor sensitivity is factory set to suit most installations and can be adjusted if required.

Relay Output & Connections

The BOD4-RLY provides normally-open (NO), common (COM) and normally-closed (NC) relay connections.

The contacts are volt-free, allowing the relay to be incorporated into a wide variety of accessory circuits. The relay is rated for loads of up to 1.5A at 24V DC.

The diagram shows the main BOD4-RLY connections, including the 12V DC power supply, infra-red sensor and NO/COM/NC relay contacts.

The relay can be used to operate the Faller stop electromagnet as well as LEDs, signals, filament lamps, relays, electromagnets and suitable inputs to computer-control systems.

Adjustable Operating Modes

The BOD4-RLY includes several built-in programs, allowing its behaviour to be adapted to different automation requirements.

Available functions include instantaneous detection, signal operation, short and long relay pulses, recurring pulses and relay toggle operation.

Additional settings allow the trigger delay, relay operating time, sensor sensitivity and retrigger delay to be adjusted. Randomised timing and proportional triggering are also available for applications where the relay should not operate identically on every detection.

+5V Auxiliary Output

A regulated +5V DC auxiliary output is provided for low-current accessories such as LEDs, small relays or lamps.

The +5V output has a maximum current rating of 100mA.

Electrical Requirements

  • Power Supply: Regulated 12V DC.
  • Typical Current Consumption: Approximately 0.25A.
  • Recommended Power Supply Rating: 0.5A to 1A.
  • Relay Rating: Up to 1.5A at 24V DC.
  • Relay Contacts: Normally open, common and normally closed.
  • Relay Contact Type: Volt-free.
  • Auxiliary Output: Regulated +5V DC.
  • Maximum Auxiliary Output Current: 100mA.
  • Sensor: Infra-red emitter/detector supplied.

The BOD4-RLY should be powered from a suitable 12V DC regulated power supply. The manual recommends a supply rated between 0.5A and 1A and advises against using an unsuitable auxiliary accessory output from a train controller.
