About the Product
The BLOCKsignalling IRP1 is an automatic points controller designed to detect approaching trains and operate standard twin-coil solenoid point motors automatically. Using two infra-red sensors positioned around the track, the module can detect passing trains and set the points to the required route without manual intervention.
The IRP1 can be configured for both facing and trailing points, making it suitable for a wide variety of model railway applications. With trailing points, the module can automatically set the points to match the line from which a train is approaching. With facing points, trains can be automatically directed between the main and branch routes.
For facing points, the module can be programmed to send a selected proportion of trains onto the branch line, either in a regular sequence or at random, adding variety to automatic layout operation.

Infra-Red Train Detection
Two infra-red sensors are included with the IRP1 and are normally installed beneath the track. Each sensor contains an infra-red emitter and detector and works by detecting reflected infra-red light from passing rolling stock.
The sensors have a detection range of up to approximately 25mm under normal sensitivity settings and can be installed through an 8mm hole in the baseboard. They can also be positioned alongside the track to detect trains from the side if required.
Sensor sensitivity is factory set to suit most installations but can be adjusted from 1 to 10 where required.
Facing Points Operation
When used with facing points, the IRP1 detects an approaching train and automatically selects either the main or branch route.
The module can be programmed to route trains to the branch line at a selected ratio. For example, it can send one in every two, three or four trains to the branch. Regular routing provides a predictable sequence, while random routing varies which trains are sent to the branch.
A second sensor can detect when the train has completely cleared the points, preventing the points from changing underneath a passing train.
Trailing Points Operation
When used with trailing points, sensors are positioned on the main and branch lines approaching the points.
When a train is detected on either line, the IRP1 automatically operates the points to select the route from which the train is approaching. This can be particularly useful for automatically routing trains leaving sidings, goods yards or terminus stations.
Electrical Requirements
The IRP1 operates alongside a Capacitor Discharge Unit (CDU), which supplies the high-current pulse required by twin-coil point motors.
The module connects to the CDU output for points operation and also to the power supply feeding the CDU for its electronic circuitry. A single CDU can be shared between multiple IRP1 modules and manually operated points.
The IRP1 is rated for a maximum of 16V AC, or up to 20V DC when the CDU is powered from a DC supply.
Alternative Sensor Inputs
Although designed for infra-red train detection, the IRP1 can also be programmed to operate using reed switches, push buttons, relays or other switch contacts.
Either or both sensor inputs can be configured for switch operation, providing additional flexibility for different layout installations.

- Points locking and unlock time.
- Sensor detection time.
- Retriggering behaviour.
- Points position when the module is powered on.
