About the Product

The BLOCKsignalling M1 is a universal model railway automation and sequential control module, designed to automate trains, points, signals and other layout operations using two independent relay outputs.

When triggered, the M1 can carry out a pre-programmed action, wait for a train to reach its infra-red sensor or for a programmed condition to be met, and then complete the sequence. A DONE output can trigger another M1, allowing several modules to be linked together to create more complex automatic sequences.

Multiple M1 modules can be connected in sequence, or connected in a loop for continuous automatic operation, making the module particularly useful for applications such as fiddle yards, automatic points operation, signals and train direction control.

Key Features

  • Universal module for model railway automation and sequential control.
  • Two independent relay outputs.
  • Relay contacts rated up to 1A at 24V DC.
  • Built-in infra-red train detection.
  • Can be triggered by a push-button, switch, reed relay, infra-red sensor or another M1.
  • DONE output allows multiple M1 modules to be linked together.
  • Modules can be connected in a loop for continuous sequential operation.
  • Built-in fiddle yard control program.
  • Automatic solenoid points control program.
  • Tortoise and Cobalt stall-motor points control program.
  • Automatic train direction-change program.
  • Dapol signal control program.
  • 3-aspect LED or filament signal control program.
  • Fully programmable universal operating mode.
  • Adjustable relay timings and operating sequences.
  • Fixed or randomised additional delays available.
  • Screw-terminal connections for straightforward installation.
  • Operates from a 12V DC power supply.

Sequential Layout Automation

The M1 is designed so that individual modules can work together to perform a sequence of operations.

After an M1 completes its programmed task, its DONE output can be connected to the TRIG input of another M1. The second module then performs its task before triggering the next module in the sequence.

If the final module is connected back to the first, the sequence can operate continuously.

This provides a flexible way to create automated sections of a model railway without requiring a computer or complex external control system.

Fiddle Yard Automation

One of the M1's built-in programs is designed specifically for automatic fiddle yard operation.

The module can power an isolated section to move a waiting train forward. When the train reaches the infra-red sensor, the relay switches the isolated section off again and the M1 sends its DONE signal to the next module.

Multiple M1 modules can therefore be linked together so that trains move forward through a fiddle yard one at a time. The system can also be arranged as a continuous loop.

Automatic Points Control

The M1 can automatically operate solenoid point motors to route trains.

When triggered, the module selects the required route and operates the points. Once the train reaches the infra-red sensor, the points can automatically return to their previous position. More than one set of points can be connected where required.

A Capacitor Discharge Unit (CDU) must be used when operating solenoid point motors with this program.

The M1 also has a separate program for operating stall-type point motors such as Tortoise or Cobalt, using its two relays to reverse the polarity supplied to the motor.

Signal Control

The M1 includes dedicated programs for automatic model railway signal operation.

A built-in program can control Dapol motorised signals, operating the two relay outputs in sequence before and after a train reaches the infra-red sensor.

Another program supports 3-aspect LED or filament-bulb signals, allowing the indication to automatically progress between green, red and yellow according to the operating sequence and train detection.

Automatic Direction Control

The M1 can also be configured to reverse the direction of traction current.

When triggered, the module's two relays reverse the track supply polarity. Once the train reaches the infra-red sensor, the traction current is restored to its original direction.

This provides another option for incorporating automatic train movements into a larger sequential system.

Universal Programmable Mode

For applications not covered by the dedicated programs, Program 8 provides a highly configurable universal mode.

The operating sequence of both relays can be customised, including relay timing, pulse operation, triggering method and additional delays. The module can also introduce randomised delays for less predictable and more varied operation.

Triggers can be configured to use the TRIG input, infra-red sensor or another suitable external input, and the module can also be configured so that a trigger is not required for certain stages of the sequence.

This makes the M1 suitable for creating custom automated operations beyond its standard built-in programs.

Infra-Red Train Detection

The supplied infra-red sensor combines an emitter and detector in a compact package and can be installed beneath the track.

Infra-red light is reflected from the underside of passing rolling stock, allowing the M1 to detect when a train reaches the required position.

The sensor wiring can be extended where necessary using suitable additional cable.

Electrical Requirements

  • Power Supply: 12V DC.
  • Current Consumption – Idle: Approximately 10mA.
  • Current Consumption – One Relay Energised: Approximately 50mA.
  • Current Consumption – Both Relays Energised: Approximately 100mA.
  • Relay Outputs: Two independent relays.
  • Relay Contact Rating: Up to 1A at 24V DC.
  • Train Detection: Infra-red sensor.
  • Connections: Screw terminals.
